Bolmen Research Station, owned by Sydvatten and operated by Sweden Water Research, is a SITES associated station that participates in the AquaNet lake mesocosom experiments. The experiments provide knowledge on how the lake Bolmen responds to disturbances and environmental change, which is important to ensure that it remains a reliable water supply in the future.
A recent study used the AquaNet facilties at the lake Bolmen and other four SITES lakes to investigate the impacts of pulse disturbances (short-term events, such as changes in fish presence) and press disturbances (ongoing stressors, like reduced light availability due to lake browning). The results highlighted how these disturbances, alone or in combination, can significantly alter the functioning and composition of multitrophic plankton communities. The SITES 2024 Calendar theme is “SITES Collaborations”. SITES aims to promote excellent ecosystem research and high-quality data that support this research. This includes collaborations that increase the number of projects that utilize multiple SITES stations and connect between aquatic and terrestrial processes. Further, SITES aims to strengthen the collaborations with relevant research infrastructures and networks across Sweden and internationally, including data infrastructures and services. Each month during 2024, follow along as we highlight a unique SITES collaboration.
